Uniplex Host started as a hobby project. At the time, I was working for a hosting company and wanted to start my own. I had a lot of things I was personally running already, I had friends and people I knew online who could be potential customers, and I was curious enough to figure out the rest.
How It Works
When we first launched, billing was handled through a Discord bot I developed myself. It required manual intervention on my end since I had to confirm whether a user had actually paid before processing their renewal. I did consider using AI to handle that verification, but ultimately decided it made more sense to switch to WHMCS, which is a proper billing platform. We have always used Pterodactyl Panel for game servers and Discord bot hosting. When we moved into VPS hosting, first on a rented dedicated server and later on our own hardware, we started using Convoy Panel as well.
The Challenges
The hardest part of running Uniplex Host is finding the time to manage it while being a full-time student. In high school I had a lot more time to dedicate to it, but college has made that significantly harder. A small startup like this requires consistent attention across support, billing, infrastructure, and growth, and I'll admit it doesn't always get the attention it deserves. That is something I am still working on.
Where We Are
Uniplex Host has reached 35+ active customers, 60+ active services, and around $5,000 in revenue. These aren't massive numbers, but they are real ones that were built from scratch without any outside funding.
If You Want to Start a Hosting
I would first recommend gaining experience managing your own small panel on a rented VPS before charging anyone for anything. It is a very competitive space with a lot of established players, so growing is difficult, but it is definitely possible. Being a Computer Science and Business Administration student has helped me quite a bit. My CS background has given me a better understanding of system administration, and my business knowledge has helped me improve my advertising strategies over time.
